How to get an Oregon CCB contractor license

Not legal advice. This page summarizes public information as of October 14, 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the linked official source before you act.

Oregon law generally requires anyone paid to do construction work on real property to hold a Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license. That includes roofing, painting, carpentry, flooring, concrete, HVAC, tree service and handyman work. Gutter cleaning, pressure washing for cleaning and debris cleanup do not need one.

The 9 steps (summarized from the CCB)

  1. Training and exam. Your Responsible Managing Individual (RMI) completes 16 hours of pre-license training with an approved provider, then passes the Oregon exam: 80 multiple-choice questions, 70% to pass, 3 hours, open book, $60.
  2. Pick your endorsement (residential, commercial, or both). See the CCB endorsement chart.
  3. Register your business (LLC, corporation or assumed business name) with the Oregon Secretary of State.
  4. Get a CCB surety bond for your endorsement. See bond amounts.
  5. Get general liability insurance with the CCB named as certificate holder.
  6. Workers' compensation if you have employees (see Oregon Workers' Compensation Division).
  7. Employer and tax numbers as needed.
  8. Complete the application (online is fastest).
  9. Submit with the bond, insurance certificate, signatures form and the $400 two-year license fee.

Timeline: the CCB says applications can take 6 to 8 weeks. You must apply within 24 months of passing the exam. Renewal is every two years ($400), and residential contractors need continuing education.
