Oregon Build Guide

Hiring a contractor in Oregon: a homeowner checklist

Not legal advice. This page summarizes public information as of October 14, 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the linked official source before you act.
  1. Check the license on the CCB license search: active status, the right endorsement, and any complaint history.
  2. Confirm bond and insurance. Every CCB licensee must carry both. See the minimums.
  3. Get at least two written bids with the same scope so you can compare.
  4. Get a written contract that lists scope, price, schedule, payment milestones and how changes are handled.
  5. Ask who pulls the permit. See permit offices by city.
  6. Do not pay far ahead of the work. Tie payments to completed milestones.
  7. Keep records of every change order and payment.

If something goes wrong, the CCB has a dispute resolution process. Start at the CCB website.

Contractors: this is the checklist your customers are reading. Being ready with license, bond and insurance proof wins jobs.
